Dollhouse- Work In Progress! Pt. 2

Dollhouse- Work In Progress! Pt. 2

Construction on the dollhouse has officially begun! As a perfectionist in recovery, I didn't want to spend too much time researching options. The amount of information and opinions available on the internet is overwhelming to say the least, and would have most certainly consumed me (hence my motto to just wing it).

My inspiration for this project was based on the stunning house from the movie Practical Magic (Did you know this house was only fiction? It was built exclusively for the movie and was just a frame! Read its history here https://houseandhistory.com/practical-magic-house/ ).

I drew up my very rough blueprints using the Procreate app for iPad, and began thinking about what materials I wanted to use. I considered my skill level first... As much as I would love to create a genuine wooden dollhouse, I am not very accurate with a saw and value all 10 of my fingers staying attached to my hand. I also considered cost. Its very easy to get lost in the cost when you have a specific vision for something, but I was quickly humbled by the fact that I decided to start my own craft business and money decided not to grow on trees.

I ultimately decided to go with some very preschool-esque materials, chipboard and popsicle sticks. I bought a 25-pack of chipboard off of Amazon for $15 and a whopping 2,000 popsicle sticks for $20. Aside from the wood base that I plan to build on (bought @ Lowes), and the hot glue gun/sticks that I already had...those two items were my only costs for shell construction.

Lets get started!

First floor frame done! I plan to make the left room the living area, which is on a platform so I can make a nice wrap around porch on the front (this happened by total accident...but I found a solution)! The middle area is going to be a tower filled by an epic spiral staircase that leads all the way to the soon to be attic/library, and the right side will be the kitchen/dining area. This was fairly simple to put together using only hot glue and a box cutter to make my walls and windows. Again, there was no legitimate planning so I just went with it and tried to keep the frame simple and within my skill level.

Coming Soon: Second floor!!
